The official language in Malawi is English. However, the most widely spoken language in everyday life is Chichewa, which is also recognized as a national language. Many people are bilingual, using English for formal communication and Chichewa at home. Other local languages like Tumbuka, Yao, and Lomwe are also spoken in different regions. English is taught in schools and used in government and business. Travelers who speak English will have no trouble getting around. The country’s language diversity mirrors its warm and welcoming culture.
