The official language in Mauritania is Arabic. Modern Standard Arabic is used in formal communication, while Hassaniya Arabic is the main spoken dialect. French is also widely used in business, government, and education. In addition, several local languages like Pulaar, Soninke, and Wolof are spoken by different ethnic groups. Many Mauritanians are multilingual, shifting between Arabic and French with ease. English is slowly gaining popularity among younger people. The country’s language diversity mirrors its blend of Arab and African cultures.
