The official language in Moldova is Romanian, often referred to locally as Moldovan. It’s used in schools, government, and media throughout the country. Russian is also widely spoken, especially in urban areas and among older generations. In the autonomous region of Gagauzia, people also speak Gagauz, a Turkic language. Many Moldovans are multilingual, switching easily between Romanian, Russian, and sometimes English. English is becoming more common among young people. The country’s language blend reflects its Eastern European and post-Soviet history.
