The official language in Montenegro is Montenegrin. It’s very similar to Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian, and people across the Balkans can easily understand each other. Many Montenegrins also speak Serbian at home or use both interchangeably. English is becoming more common, especially in tourism and among younger generations. In some areas, you may also hear Albanian and Bosnian. The language uses both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets, though the Latin script is more common. Montenegrin reflects the country’s cultural ties within the broader Balkan region.
