The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese. It’s used in government, media, and education, and serves as a unifying language across the country’s many ethnic groups. However, most people also speak one or more local languages, such as Makhuwa, Sena, or Tsonga. In cities, you’ll often hear a mix of Portuguese and local dialects. English is taught in schools and used in tourism and international business. Because of its colonial history, Mozambique’s Portuguese has a distinct local flavor. The country’s linguistic diversity reflects its rich cultural roots and traditions.
