The official language of North Korea is Korean. It’s nearly identical to the language spoken in South Korea, though some vocabulary and pronunciation differ. The North Korean version of Korean uses fewer foreign words and emphasizes native terms. English is taught in schools but is not widely used in daily life. Russian and Chinese are also spoken by small communities near the borders. The Korean alphabet, Hangul, is the same as in the South and is considered one of the most logical writing systems in the world. The language plays a big role in promoting national identity and unity.
