The official languages of Peru are Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara. Spanish is the most widely spoken and used in government, media, and education. Quechua and Aymara are spoken mainly in the Andean regions and among Indigenous communities. Many Peruvians are bilingual, using Spanish for official matters and their native language at home. English is commonly spoken in tourist areas and among younger generations. The country’s language diversity reflects its rich Indigenous heritage. Learning a few Quechua phrases can make visits to rural areas more meaningful.
