The official language in the Maldives is Dhivehi, sometimes called Maldivian. It has its own unique script, Thaana, and is spoken throughout the islands. English is widely used in schools, government, and especially in the tourism industry. Many locals are fluent in both Dhivehi and English. In some areas, you may also hear Arabic words due to Islamic influence. The language has roots in Indo-Aryan and carries traces of Arabic and Sinhalese. Dhivehi connects the islanders through their shared culture and history.
