Bangladesh crippled by nationwide protest as ex-prime minister’s verdict looms

Massive disruptions hit Bangladesh when the ex-ruling Awami League, led by fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, called for a nationwide “lockdown” in protest of the anticipated tribunal verdict regarding a deadly 2024 crackdown. Public transportation was disrupted, schools shifted to online classes, and multiple instances of violence were reported across Dhaka and other cities. The interim government has pledged elections for February but faces accusations of suppressing opposition and denying fair participation. Analysts warn that the political crisis is deepening divisions and could undermine democratic norms just months ahead of national elections. The unrest adds to mounting concerns about governance and stability in one of South Asia’s most populous nations.
