Two major climate assessments released ahead of the COP30 negotiations in Brazil indicate that current national commitments remain insufficient, leaving the planet on course for around 2.6 °C of warming by the end of the century. Although emissions growth has slowed marginally, fossil-fuel consumption continues to rise and carbon sinks are weakening, according to the update. Analysts warn that a 2.6 °C world would bring widespread crop failures, irreversible ecosystem collapse, and severe weather shocks. Developing nations at the summit are pushing for a “just transition” away from fossil fuels, while wealthier countries have shown limited progress in delivering financing and structural change. The reports call for immediate scaling of ambition and quicker action, noting that even long-term “net-zero” pledges will not offset near-term policy inertia.
