Ukraine ramps up audit of state-run firms amid EU funding tensions

In a heightened anti-corruption move, Yulia Svyrydenko—Prime Minister of Ukraine—announced a sweeping audit of key state-owned enterprises including the nuclear operator Energoatom as part of broader governance reforms. The announcement follows a call with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in which Germany emphasised expectations for strong rule-of-law progress as Ukraine prepares for deeper EU integration. The move aims to reassure the European Commission and other donors that Ukraine’s oversight institutions are functioning effectively. However, opposition within the EU, particularly from Hungary, has raised doubts about continued funding amidst regulatory concerns. Ukraine’s government emphasises that restoring international trust is a prerequisite for securing both financial aid and long-term membership prospects.
