What was Charles Darwin's family background?

Darwin came from a big family with strong scientific and medical traditions, and most of his relatives were well-educated. His father, Robert Darwin, was a successful doctor, and his grandfather Erasmus Darwin was a well-known thinker who wrote about evolution even before Charles did. He also had siblings who followed professional paths, so education and ambition were normal expectations in the family. Later in life he married his cousin, Emma Wedgwood, which wasn’t unusual at the time. They had ten children together, and several of them became scientists and scholars. Family was a huge part of his everyday life. People who knew him said he was a patient and loving husband and dad.
