Diana was extremely devoted to her sons and wanted them to have as normal a childhood as possible. She took them to Disney World, McDonald’s, and theme parks—things royal kids weren’t expected to do. She insisted they mix with regular children and see hospitals and charities up close to learn empathy. Diana also made sure she was emotionally available, often hugging them in public when that kind of affection wasn’t typical in the royal family. She did school drop-offs herself and called them every day when she was away. Both William and Harry have said she shaped their values and compassion. In a lot of ways, motherhood was the part of her life she treasured most.
