A short walk from the Acropolis leads you into the historic Plaka neighbourhood, known for its narrow streets, neoclassical architecture and charming shops and cafés. The Acropolis Museum near the base of the hill houses many original sculptures and artefacts from the site and is well worth a visit. Close by, Dionysiou Areopagitou Street is a scenic pedestrian thoroughfare ideal for strolling among ancient sites and modern culture. On the slopes you can also find the ancient Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus used for cultural performances. Many visitors enjoy wandering through other nearby ruins, such as Hadrian’s Library and the Roman Agora. The area combines historical richness with lively local life, offering restaurants, viewpoints and cultural experiences. A visit to the Acropolis and its surroundings gives a full sense of Athens’ long and layered history.
