The Acropolis has been inhabited and significant since prehistoric times, but its most famous buildings were constructed during the 5th century BCE. This period, known as the Golden Age of Athens, saw the rebuilding of the Acropolis after destruction by the Persians in earlier wars. The Parthenon was completed around 432 BCE, while other monuments such as the Erechtheion and Temple of Athena Nike were finished slightly later. Many of these ancient structures have survived in part despite centuries of war, weathering and reuse. Later additions and changes occurred during Roman and Byzantine rule. Modern archaeological study and restoration work continue to uncover details about its construction phases. The site encapsulates a long evolution of Greek art, religion and civic identity.
