The Acropolis of Athens has a long and layered history dating back to prehistoric times, but it became most famous during the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century BCE. Under the leadership of Pericles, major structures were constructed including the Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena. These buildings were masterpieces of ancient Greek architecture and symbolised the power and culture of Athens. Over the centuries the site was transformed, serving as a temple, a fortress and even a church and mosque at various times. Many original sculptures and elements were damaged or taken during periods of war and occupation. Restoration efforts today seek to preserve what remains and stabilise the structures. The Acropolis remains one of the most important archaeological and historical sites in the world.
