How old is the Great Buddha of Kamakura?

The Great Buddha was originally built in the year 1252. That makes it more than 750 years old. It was first housed inside a large temple hall. Over time, typhoons and earthquakes destroyed the building around it. The statue itself survived all of these natural disasters. Since the 15th century, it has stood outdoors. This long history adds to its cultural importance.
