Ski Mountaineering at the 2026 Winter Olympics

Ski mountaineering will make its Olympic debut at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, marking the first time this challenging mountain sport is featured on the Olympic programme. The competitions are set to take place at the Stelvio Ski Centre in Bormio, Italy, with events scheduled between February 19 and February 21, 2026. There are three medal events: men’s sprint, women’s sprint, and a mixed relay, bringing together speed, endurance, and teamwork on steep alpine terrain. Athletes compete over courses that include uphills using “skins” on skis, short boot-packing sections on foot, and swift downhill sections, blending aspects of climb and descent. Only 36 athletes — 18 men and 18 women — will qualify for the Games, with each nation able to enter up to two men and two women. Qualification rankings come from the World Cup and World Championship results during the Olympic qualifying period. Ski mountaineering’s sprint races are fast and intense, usually lasting just a few minutes as competitors battle for the quickest time. The mixed relay adds a tactical team element, with one man and one woman combining efforts in a relay format that tests speed, transitions, and coordination.
