Doklam isn’t a typical tourist destination — it’s a high-altitude plateau in a remote part of the Himalayas with ongoing border sensitivities. Historically, the area was only visited by nomads, shepherds, or local traders because of its rugged terrain and lack of infrastructure. Recently China has allowed some tourism development on the Chinese-claimed side, including sightseeing buses and village stays, but this access is very controlled and mostly aimed at domestic tourists. Because the region’s political status is unresolved and border patrols are active, foreign tourism is limited and generally not straightforward. Outside of those limited initiatives, most people don’t visit Doklam like they would a normal travel destination. Anyone considering travel near disputed border areas should carefully check government advisories and permissions, since rules can change. The high mountain environment itself also requires proper acclimatization if you’re going to very high elevations.
