The Doklam Plateau is a high-altitude area in the eastern Himalayas that sits near where the borders of India, Bhutan, and China meet. It’s a relatively small region — about 89 km² — featuring a plateau and valley landscape surrounded by mountain ridges. The plateau lies near the Chumbi Valley of Tibet to the north, Bhutan’s Haa District to the east, and India’s Sikkim state to the west. Because of its location, it’s considered strategically important for all three countries and has been the subject of ongoing disputes. In Tibetan, “Doklam” (or Donglang) refers to a nomad’s path through this rugged terrain. The area isn’t a typical tourist place; for many years it was remote and visited mostly by shepherds and traders. Now it’s known internationally because of its geopolitical importance.
