The Doklam Plateau is officially disputed territory, with different claims from Bhutan and China that no formal settlement has fully resolved. Bhutan and India generally view Doklam as part of Bhutan’s territory, and India supports Bhutan’s position because of long-standing ties and security agreements. China, however, claims the region — calling it Donglang — and bases part of its position on historical treaties between China and Britain from the 1890s that it interprets to extend its frontier southward. Maps and interpretations differ among the three states, especially around the exact tri-junction point where all borders meet, leading to differing views about where the boundary lines should fall. Because Bhutan was not a party to some older treaties cited by China, its government and India argue those documents don’t settle the border. The situation has remained unresolved despite decades of talks. These overlapping claims are part of why the plateau has become a sensitive geopolitical spot.
