What is Pyongyang and why is it famous?

Pyongyang is the capital city of North Korea, officially called the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and it sits along the Taedong River in the southwest part of the country. It’s one of the most talked-about capitals in the world because it’s the political, cultural, and economic centre of a very closed-off country. The city was destroyed during the Korean War and later rebuilt with grand boulevards, big public buildings, and wide streets to reflect the state’s ideals. Pyongyang’s skyline includes huge monuments and revolutionary landmarks that you won’t see anywhere else. It’s also known for strict control over who can live in or even visit the city, which makes it seem mysterious to many people. Even though it’s hard for outsiders to go there, Pyongyang pops up in international news and travel stories a lot. Its unique mix of history, politics, and planned urban design draws curiosity from people around the globe.
