Williams-Brice Stadium currently holds around 80,000 fans depending on the seating configuration. The stadium originally opened with a capacity of only about 17,600 seats in 1934. Over the years, multiple expansions and renovations gradually increased the size of the venue. By the 1980s the capacity had grown dramatically as upper decks and additional seating areas were added. Today it ranks among the larger college football stadiums in the United States. Big rivalry games often fill every seat, creating an intense and loud atmosphere. The huge crowd sizes help give the Gamecocks one of the strongest home environments in the SEC.
