Williams-Brice Stadium first opened in 1934 during the Great Depression era. The project was supported by the Works Progress Administration, a federal program that funded public construction projects at the time. The original structure had seating for about 17,600 fans and was called Columbia Municipal Stadium. Over time, the university expanded the facility as the football program and fan base grew. In the 1940s the stadium began transforming into the bowl shape that fans recognize today. Later renovations added upper decks, premium seating areas, and modern technology. Even after many updates, the stadium still carries nearly a century of football history.
