The stadium is named after Martha Williams-Brice and Thomas Hardin Brice, whose family helped fund major stadium expansions. The facility was originally called Columbia Municipal Stadium when it opened in 1934. In 1941 it was transferred to the University of South Carolina and renamed Carolina Stadium. Later, a large donation from the Williams and Brice families helped finance major renovations and expansions. In recognition of that contribution, the stadium was officially renamed Williams-Brice Stadium in 1972. The name honors both the donors and their connection to South Carolina football history. Since then the name has remained tied to the Gamecocks’ home field.
