Legion Field is a historic outdoor stadium in Birmingham that’s been a major part of the city’s sports scene since it opened in 1927. It was named in honor of the American Legion, which is a veterans organization, and locals often call it “The Old Gray Lady.” Over the decades it has hosted tons of football games at different levels, from high school rivalries to big college classics. The venue has also been used for concerts, community events, and even Olympic soccer matches back in 1996. With its classic red‑brick exterior and big bowl design, Legion Field is one of the oldest stadiums still in use in the Southeast. Today it’s still a go‑to spot for major events and big crowds. Folks who visit say it feels like you’re stepping into a piece of Alabama history every time you walk through the gates.
