Today, Fort McNair serves as a key military and administrative center in Washington, D.C., supporting the U.S. Army’s Military District of Washington. It hosts important defense institutions, including the National Defense University and the U.S. Army Center of Military History. The base also includes housing for senior military officials and various support facilities. Because of its location, it sometimes plays a role in official government transport operations, including helicopter landings. It’s not a combat base but more of a leadership, education, and coordination hub. The site also has historic buildings and green spaces that reflect its long history. Even after more than 200 years, it remains an active and important part of the U.S. military system.
