The fort is named after Lieutenant General Lesley J. McNair, a senior U.S. Army officer who played a major role during World War II. He was known for helping shape the structure and training of the Army’s ground forces. In 1944, he was killed in Normandy during Operation Cobra in a tragic friendly fire incident. A few years later, in 1948, the military renamed the base in his honor. Before that, it had gone through several names, including Washington Arsenal and Washington Barracks. Naming the fort after McNair was a way to recognize his contributions and sacrifice. Today, his legacy is still tied closely to the identity of the base.
