Fort McNair is one of the oldest continuously active military posts in the United States, with roots going all the way back to 1791. It originally started as the Washington Arsenal, which stored weapons and helped defend the young capital city. Over the years, it played roles in major events like the War of 1812 and the Civil War. One of the most famous moments tied to the site was the trial and execution of the conspirators involved in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. The fort has also been used as a hospital, prison, and training center at different points in history. It was renamed in 1948 after General Lesley J. McNair, who was killed during World War II. Today, it stands as both a working military base and a place filled with deep American history.
