Republican-led states send National Guard troops to Washington, D.C.

West Virginia said it would deploy hundreds of National Guard members to Washington, D.C. after a request from the White House. Officials framed the move as supporting public safety and logistics rather than frontline police work. The deployment follows President Trump’s federalization of D.C. policing and activation of the local Guard. Legal questions remain about the scope of authority for out-of-state Guard units in the capital. City leaders and civil-liberties advocates warned about mission creep and escalation risks. The Pentagon said the forces would focus on presence, patrol support, and specialized assistance.
