What happened at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001?

On September 11, 2001, the Pentagon was attacked by hijackers who flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the western side of the building. The attack caused significant damage and resulted in the deaths of 125 people inside the building and 59 passengers and crew on the plane. The Pentagon was quickly repaired and reinforced following the tragedy. A memorial, the Pentagon Memorial, now honors the victims. The event highlighted the building’s symbolic and operational importance.
