Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world, at 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet).
It was first successfully climbed by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
Everest is known as “Sagarmatha” in Nepal and “Chomolungma” in Tibet.
The mountain is still growing due to tectonic activity at about 4 millimeters per year.
Thousands of climbers attempt to reach the summit each year, with varying success rates.
Everest has areas called the “Death Zone” above 8,000 meters where oxygen levels are dangerously low.
The first woman to summit Everest was Junko Tabei from Japan in 1975.
Debris and human waste from climbing have raised environmental concerns on Everest.
Everest continues to inspire adventurers and has appeared in countless books, documentaries, and films.
