Babylon declined after successive invasions and political changes. It was conquered by the Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great in 539 BCE and later ruled by Greeks, Parthians, and Sassanians. Over time, the city lost its political and economic importance, and much of it fell into ruin. Natural erosion, neglect, and modern development further damaged the site. Today, only archaeological remains testify to its former glory. Excavations have uncovered walls, gates, and foundations of temples and palaces.
