Babylon’s origins date back to at least the 18th century BCE, although it grew significantly under the reign of King Hammurabi around 1792–1750 BCE. Hammurabi established Babylon as a political and cultural center by uniting much of Mesopotamia. The city experienced periods of decline and revival under different dynasties, including the Kassites and later the Neo-Babylonian Empire. Its peak occurred in the 6th century BCE under King Nebuchadnezzar II. Babylon’s long history reflects its importance in the ancient world.
