The local currency is the Albanian lek, and cash rules in small towns, markets, and family-run stays. In big cities and coastal hotspots, cards are accepted more and more, but don’t bank on it everywhere. ATMs are easy to find in cities—pull out some lek when you land to cover taxis, tips, and snacks. Avoid dynamic currency conversion at terminals; pay in lek for better rates. Keep small bills for buses and bakeries where change can be limited. As always, let your bank know you’re traveling so they don’t freak out over foreign withdrawals.
