North Korea uses the North Korean won, written as KPW. It’s divided into 100 chon, although coins are rarely used. Banknotes feature national leaders, monuments, and revolutionary symbols. Cash is essential for everyday transactions, as cards are virtually nonexistent for most people. The won’s value is tightly controlled by the government and does not freely float on international markets. Exchange offices are available for foreign currency, mainly in Pyongyang. The North Korean won reflects the country’s controlled economy and isolation.
