Tonga uses the Tongan paʻanga, written as TOP. It has been the official currency since 1967, replacing the Tongan pound. Banknotes feature national leaders, cultural symbols, and local wildlife. Cash is widely used, though cards are accepted in larger towns and tourist areas like Nukuʻalofa. Coins are used for smaller transactions. The paʻanga’s value is relatively stable and managed by the National Reserve Bank of Tonga. The Tongan paʻanga reflects the country’s independence and unique culture.
