The official language of the Solomon Islands is English. It’s used in government, schools, and media. However, most people speak one of the 70+ local languages, with Pijin, an English-based Creole, serving as the common lingua franca. Many Solomon Islanders are bilingual or multilingual, switching between English, Pijin, and their native language. English is helpful for tourists and official matters. The local languages reflect the islands’ rich cultural diversity. The language mix gives the Solomon Islands a unique and vibrant identity.
