The official languages of Uganda are English and Swahili. English is used in government, education, and business, while Swahili is growing in importance as a unifying national language. Most Ugandans also speak one or more of the country’s 40+ local languages, with Luganda being the most widely spoken. In daily life, people often mix English, Luganda, and other local tongues. Swahili is common in markets and among the police and military. Many Ugandans are multilingual and switch languages depending on the situation. The country’s linguistic diversity reflects its rich cultural blend and regional connections.
