He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant but became known as Ulysses S. Grant after a West Point enrollment mix-up.

He was a surprisingly talented writer; his memoirs are praised for their clarity and power.
Grant worked odd civilian jobs, including in his father’s leather shop, before rising to fame.
He constantly worried about money after leaving the White House and wrote his memoirs to provide for his family.
Grant supported civil-rights enforcement and used federal troops to protect Black voters in the South.
Despite scandals in his administration, he refused to resign and tried to reform the government from within.
He died in 1885, and thousands turned out for his funeral — he remained a national figure to the end.
