Grant went to West Point and graduated in 1843, which set him on a military path early on. He served in the Mexican–American War but didn’t particularly enjoy the peacetime army life that came afterward. After leaving the army for a while he tried several jobs, including farming and working in his father’s leather shop, none of which went great. He struggled with money and had a reputation for liking a drink now and then, which critics still bring up. When the Civil War started he returned to service and quickly rose through the ranks because he was effective and calm under pressure. Those gritty, practical years before fame shaped how he led later. His West Point training and hard knocks combined into a steady military style that paid off in war.
