Where did Ulysses S. Grant come from and what was his family and ethnic background?

Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio, into a family of mostly Anglo-American background with roots in the old British Isles. His parents were Jesse and Hannah Grant; they were solidly middle-class, not aristocrats by any stretch. He married Julia Dent, whose family owned a farm in Missouri, and together they had several kids, with the usual ups and downs of 19th-century family life. Julia was a steady partner and handled a lot of the social side while Grant focused on military and, later, political work. The Grants sometimes struggled financially, especially before and after his presidency. Their domestic life felt pretty normal for the era — gritty, practical, and close-knit. Those family ties mattered a lot to him throughout his life.
