Grant earned his reputation with a string of victories early in the war — notably Fort Donelson and Vicksburg — where he showed stubbornness and tactical skill. His ability to coordinate large movements and accept hard odds made him the go-to commander for Union leadership. Lincoln eventually promoted him to general-in-chief because Grant pushed hard and got results when others hesitated. He favored aggressive strategy and logistics, which helped grind down Confederate forces. Grant’s cooperation with Sherman and others led to the final collapse of Confederate resistance. His willingness to accept large-scale operations and keep pressure up is a big reason the war ended when it did. People still study his campaigns for how modern command works under pressure.
