After the war Grant was a national hero, and voters trusted him to lead the country through Reconstruction, so he won the presidency in 1868 and again in 1872. His main aims were to stabilize the postwar nation, protect the civil and voting rights of newly freed Black Americans, and rebuild the economy. He pushed for enforcement of civil-rights laws and sent federal troops to defend Black voters in the South when necessary. Grant backed the 15th Amendment’s enforcement and supported prosecutions against groups like the Ku Klux Klan. He also wanted to modernise the federal government and support industry. Unfortunately, his administration got tangled in corruption scandals that hurt those goals politically.
