What was Ulysses S. Grant’s personal life like after the presidency?

After leaving office in 1877, Grant faced money troubles and some failed business ventures, which was hard on him and Julia. Late in life he fell seriously ill with throat cancer and worried about leaving his family poor. To secure their finances he wrote his memoirs, which turned out to be a literary and financial triumph — widely praised and profitable, completed just before he died in 1885. He stayed devoted to Julia and acted like a practical, disciplined family man despite the ups and downs. Grant’s memoirs are still read for their clear, honest voice about war and leadership. His final years mixed illness, dignity, and a rush to secure his family’s future.
