They did, but it wasn’t instant—it grew over time. Roosevelt expected Taft to run the country just like he did, but Taft had his own ideas and wasn’t as aggressive or dramatic. Their friendship basically fell apart over political differences and personal misunderstandings. Roosevelt became frustrated and ended up running against Taft in 1912, which split their supporters. Taft was hurt by Roosevelt’s public attacks because he genuinely admired him. Their rivalry changed American politics, helping Woodrow Wilson win the election. It’s one of the most famous political friendships-turned-breakups.
