Roosevelt started locally in New York politics, winning a seat in the State Assembly as a reform-minded young man. He then served in Washington roles, including Assistant Secretary of the Navy, where he pushed for naval preparedness before the Spanish–American War. After raising and leading the Rough Riders in Cuba, he returned a national hero and was elected Governor of New York. His reputation as a reformer and war hero made him attractive to the Republican Party, which tapped him as McKinley’s running mate in 1900. When McKinley was assassinated in 1901, Roosevelt became president at just 42 years old. He used that sudden authority to pursue an ambitious domestic and foreign agenda. His rapid rise combined charisma, action and a knack for seizing political opportunity.
