After he lost the 1912 election, Taft went back to teaching law and living a quieter life, which he honestly preferred. He stayed active in legal work and public service, but far away from the chaos of politics. In 1921, he got his dream job—Chief Justice of the Supreme Court—and he absolutely loved it. He worked hard to modernise the judiciary and improve how the courts functioned. Many people say he was much happier on the Court than he ever was as president. He stayed in that role until his health declined. It’s the job he wanted all along.
