Hayes grew up in Ohio in a pretty modest household, and most people say he had a steady, down-to-earth upbringing. His mother worked hard to raise him and his siblings after becoming a widow. Hayes was a good student and liked reading more than anything else. He didn’t grow up dreaming of politics; he actually planned to build a career as a lawyer. Friends described him as polite, calm and very disciplined even as a young man. His experience of growing up without a father pushed him to value responsibility and stability. That probably influenced his style of leadership later on.
