Djibouti was formerly a French colony known as French Somaliland and later the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas. It became an important port and transportation hub under French rule due to its location by the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. After decades of colonial administration and development, Djibouti voted for independence in a referendum and officially became a sovereign republic on June 27, 1977. French influence remained strong in politics, language, and military presence after independence, shaping early development efforts. Since achieving statehood, Djibouti has maintained close diplomatic and economic ties with France and other international partners. Its history as a crossroads for trade and diverse cultures stretches back centuries, enriched by its position on major maritime routes. This past continues to influence Djibouti’s identity and global relationships.
